“Suburban-style” Orchard Supply store heading towards February 14 Planning Commission showdown

map

The nationwide Orchard Supply Hardware chain will bring a “suburban-style” big box retail development proposal before the Planning Commission on February 14. This retrofit of an existing structure at 975 Bryant Street puts most of its design features into a main entrance opening onto an adjacent parking lot and would have a minimal presence on the sidewalk side of the building.  Continue reading

A note from TNDC’s Don Falk

“After 12 years in development, TNDC is pleased to share that we are moving forward with our plans to develop affordable housing at 1400 Mission (corner of 10th and Mission). As some of you know, TNDC purchased the site in 2000 and the project has undergone several iterations over the years. After attempting to finance several proposals for affordable rental housing at this location, and with an eye towards what had become by 2011 a startlingly bleak picture regarding financing for affordable rental housing, TNDC entered into an agreement with Tishman Speyer to develop the site as affordable homeownership housing.  Continue reading

Folsom Fair returns to normal (schedule) this year

The Folsom Street Fair was once timed to coincide with the Autumnal Equinox. However, since 1993 the fair’s date came to be associated with the last Sunday in September.

In 2012, the fair was moved to Sunday, September 23 to avoid a conflict with Oracle Open World. For the next three years, with 2014 being the only exception, the fair will occur on the last Sunday in September.

FUTURE DATES FOR FOLSOM STREET FAIR:

Sunday, September 29, 2013
Sunday, September 21, 2014
Sunday, September 27, 2015

According to Demetri Moshoyannis, Executive Director, “Next year marks the 30th Folsom Street Fair and we will revert to our normal date on the last Sunday of the month. In 2014, we will move the date up a week again to avoid a similar conflict; but, for 2015 we are back to the last Sunday of the month again.”

New SoMa brewery proposed

The Seven Hills Brewery is a proposal to establish an ABC Type 23 licensed facility (a Small Beer Manufacturer) at 1150 Howard Street between 7th and 8th Streets. The Zoning Administrator has issued a determination that it would be allowed, as a “Light Manufacturing” use, so long as they do not exceed 2,000 beer barrels per year and do not utilize mechanical bottling equipment at the site. These are similar to conditions imposed on the Bluxome Street Winery, which began operations in 2011.

Their application describes the facility as a small artisanal beer manufacturer. It would operate primarily as a retail operation and would be open to the public with a tasting room.

iPhone App turns your phone into a decibel meter

SoundMeter+

by KELLY HODGKINS
TUAW (or The Unofficial Apple Weblog)

Most people don’t think about their background noise levels, but those who work or live in noisy environments need to be aware of sounds that could ruin their hearing. If you have an iPhone or iPad, you can monitor your ambient noise levels using the new SoundMeter+ application.

SoundMeter+ uses the iPhone’s internal microphone to measure the surrounding noise and calculate the dBA of your surroundings. You can also change the meter to measure dBC, dBB, dBD and dBZ. These different measurements take into account the different frequencies of sound. For example, the A-weighting (dBA) emphasizes those frequencies that the human ear can hear, while the B-weighting (dBB) takes into account lower frequencies and is used to measure entertainment noise Read more →

Western SoMa Plan faces little opposition as it moves towards December 6 adoption hearing

More neighbors – fewer land use attorneys – participated in helping to create the Western SoMa Community Plan at one of three Town Hall meetings held at Bessie Carmichael School

Following two informational hearings before the Planning Commission, the Western SoMa Community Plan moves relatively unscathed towards its December 6 adoption hearing. Following that Planning Commission action, the Plan will still require approval by the Board of Supervisors and the signature of the Mayor. If all goes well, the Plan could go into effect early next year.  Continue reading

Warriors arena compromise with some positive outcomes for neighbors

Published on November 14, 2012 by jamiewhitaker

The Board of Supervisors Budget and Finance Committee heard the group of CAC members and those neighbors who emailed and asked that the CAC be able to do its job and get a chance to review important details prior to the Board of Supes. Our Supervisor Jane Kim amended today’s resolution to require that the CAC have at least 2 meetings about the final term sheet and provide a written report of advice to the Board of Supervisors before the BOS can approve it this spring. New Eagle owners Alex Montiel and Mike Leon discussed their plans for the landmark gay bar at a meeting last Thursday night organized by Folsom Street Events.
