Private party for Mayors Conference closes Rincon Park access to public

Without any communications from The Port of San Francisco or the Mayor’s Office to anybody that lives along the SoMa waterfront, it was a great surprise to find that the BCDC’s supposed Public Access Seating Area that sits between Waterbar and Epic Steakhouse was closed to the Public because the U.S. Conference of Mayor’s party planners decided to buy the Embarcadero Pedestrian Promenade and Rincon Park away from the Public starting around 5pm today (Saturday, June 20th) to set up their party – and I’m guessing it will continue to be closed off to the public on Sunday. Organizers tout “bigger and better” 30th anniversary of the Folsom Street Fair

Folsom Street Events, the Bay Area-based nonprofit group that creates the world’s biggest and most notorious leather and fetish events, has announced an array of enhancements to its existing events in honor of its upcoming 30th Folsom Street Fair®. Among the upgrades to the fair itself are 30 additional minutes of fair time (so that the fair will end at 6:30pm instead of the traditional 6:00pm). In addition, the erotic artists’ area will celebrate by relocating to 8th Street north of Folsom in a new configuration and adding a small performance art stage. Continue reading →

It was quite a party

More than a hundred Western SoMa neighbors (and plenty of friends from around the city) showed up last week at the celebration of the adoption of the Western SoMa Community Plan. After eight grueling years of work (and more than a little controversy) it was a lovefest for the neighbors, activists, entertainment industry advocates and small business owners who gathered to hear from Supervisor Jane Kim, former Senior Planner Paul Lord, Planning Department rep Corey Teague and myself.

The Western SoMa Citizens Planning Task Force ceased to exist upon adoption of the Plan. I sent my last email out to the surviving members of the Task Force and in particular to those who helped to get us over the finish line. The message read: Continue reading →

Folsom Fair returns to normal (schedule) this year

The Folsom Street Fair was once timed to coincide with the Autumnal Equinox. However, since 1993 the fair’s date came to be associated with the last Sunday in September.

In 2012, the fair was moved to Sunday, September 23 to avoid a conflict with Oracle Open World. For the next three years, with 2014 being the only exception, the fair will occur on the last Sunday in September.

FUTURE DATES FOR FOLSOM STREET FAIR:

Sunday, September 29, 2013
Sunday, September 21, 2014
Sunday, September 27, 2015

According to Demetri Moshoyannis, Executive Director, “Next year marks the 30th Folsom Street Fair and we will revert to our normal date on the last Sunday of the month. In 2014, we will move the date up a week again to avoid a similar conflict; but, for 2015 we are back to the last Sunday of the month again.”

Proceeds from upcoming leather/fetish events to benefit local charity work

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (Wednesday, March 28, 2012) – The Board of Directors of Folsom Street Events announced this year’s line up of its Major and Supporting beneficiaries today. Net proceeds from five key San Francisco leather and fetish events (Bay of Pigs™, Up Your Alley®, Magnitude®, Folsom Street Fair®, and DEVIANTS™) will be donated to local charities working in public health, human services, and the arts.
